Dolphins, sails, masts, wind. The dolphins appeared around breakfast in the morning, the sails we put up more of, we luckily still have 3 masts and the wind is blowing nicely. I Spent a lot of time in the rigging today, practicing tying up sails, unfurling them again and going in around to some of the difficult spots to get to. I am getting more comfortable up there and I love the special feeling of the wind in my face as I look over the sea, and down at the dolphins which there was a lot of. I am starting to know what the different lines do and which to pull on when setting a sail. The ship is rocked by the sea and the wind, back and forth, rocking me to sleep when I go to my hammock.

Today I started the day out with a night watch from 02-04. I started out as engine watch, there I had to note things down in a notebook such as oil pressure, Running hours and a lot of temperatures. It’s actually a pretty fun task to do It didn’t take as long as expected, only around 20 minutes. When finding the things you have to note down it’s like a treasure hunt but in a engine room. After that I was orderly and my task was to do a fire round around the ship to see if everything looked good and it did. After my fire round we got something to eat before going to bed again. We got woken up again around 05:30. And I had the duty trainee watch from 06-09. I didn’t do much because there was not a lot to report about, there was not a lot of ships in the moment, But me and Karina talked about some maritime things in the meantime. It was a nice watch and the weather was very nice. After my watch that ended at 09:00 I was sail watch, we had a little rig and lines with Emil, to learn the proper way to handle the lines as safe as possible. It was also fun, we practiced the different lines Emil had shown us and it was pretty fun to do. after lunch I was duty trainee again from 12-15. It was also a nice watch, while on watch I saw the others setting the fore and main upper topsail, and in the meantime I was helping Bjarke folding some flags so they are ready to be hoisted if needed. After my watch there was three break, for three break we got koldskål. It was so delicious. After three break I was sail watch again, Lucas, Andre and i was sent up in the rigging to set the main upper topsail fast. It was a fun task, and there was a very good view from up there. When we were done we went up in the foremast and did the same thing. We didn’t get done with that sail but It is alright it was just as fun as the last one. When we got down we had a nice dinner with some good food. And that is what I had done today.

The day started at 1:40 AM when our quartermaster woke us up. We had to be ready by 2:00 AM to take over the previous watch so they could go below and get the rest of their night’s sleep. Our quartermaster mustered us and said we could go into the rigging to wake ourselves up properly; however, I ended up going out unto the jib boom to do a lap around it. And as I was out there, feeling the waves and watching the bow cut through them, with the cold strong wind blowing around me, I felt the true freedom that you simply cannot find anywhere else.

Today we got woken up at 06.00 by one of the quartermasters. And like the previous mornings it’s not a single second of snoozing. It’s straight to packing together the hammocks as tight as possible. This morning was a good morning considering we improved from four mistakes to only two mistakes. Even though the goal is zero mistakes our mess was still happy to for the improvement compared to yesterday. After some well needed breakfast and morning choir our quarter got the job of loading provisions on to the ship. It was cool to see how fast you can get a whole truck of food transported onto the ship just with having 30 people working together. We transported provisions from 08.00 to 15.00 not including the break we had at 10.00 and the lunch at 12.00. The time went by faster than you would think and at 13.00 the chief steward let 20 of us go because we had enough time. So, from 13.00 to 15.00 we all practiced learning the rigging lines and their names. It was a really good opportunity and I feel much more confident in the rigging lines than I did yesterday. Still a long way to go until I’ve learned every line, but its only the fourth day so I’m not worried. After the break at 15.00 we got introduced to the roles of being lookout, helmsman, engine watch and duty trainee when we come out sailing. It was very informative but it also got me really eager and excited to set sail and leave the harbor here in Frederikshavn. It was then dinner at 17.00, which as always exceed my expectations. After the 18.00 muster our quarter had a lecture on how the IT works onboard. We got information on how we can use the ships laptops on our free time to read the news, look at previous powerpoints and other useful functions. The function I was most excited about though, was getting the password to our webmail. It gives me the opportunity to have some sort of communication with my loved ones at home, which I of course very much appreciate. After this lecture about IT everyone in our quarter put up their hammocks to prepare for the nights sleep but also because after all of our hammocks were up, we were aloud our phones back to call home one last time before we set sail for Vigo. Then after that; the usual night routine, train a little in the birth deck, take a shower, brush the teeth and get in the hammock to get ready for tomorrow.
